Vernon is a smooth-skined, dark green, apple-shaped fruit. The white custard-like flesh is ultrasweet; the flavor is described as exquisite, with hints of peach, pear, lemon, banana, caramel and vanilla.
White sapote will thrive in a wide range of soils as long as the drainage is good. Choose a planting site carefully. Sapote needs full sun in California costal areas, half a day of sun in hot interior areas. Tree roots will often extend 50' and because the prolific fruit crop falls to the ground, trees attract birds and critters and are messy. Water young trees regularly. Established trees are drought-tolerant. White sapote trees can get very large, but can be controlled with pruning. The fruit is extremely delicate and does not ship well. Sapote is eaten fresh or used frozen in smoothies or milkshakes.
