A vigorous, naturally evergreen shrub bearing large clusters of tubular maroon flowers at the ends of arching branches from spring to fall and or nearly year round under warm frost free conditions. Pollinated flowers may be followed by reddish purple berries. The fuzzy bronze-red green foliage adds to its interest. An excellent choice for hummingbirds and larger butterflies. Newell's Red Cestrum can easily be enjoyed as a container plant where not hardy.
Newell's Red Cestrum is considered by many to be a hybrid and it certainly has the flower power to prove it flowering basically continuously on new growth throughout the year in our greenhouses. It is naturally an arching to upright shrub-like perennial that remains evergreen in the warmer portions of its cold hardiness range but well-established plants may act like die-back perennials in zones 8B and 9A. Provide a breathable winter mulch and good drainage in areas where winters drop below freezing for any length of time to help ensure its return. Planting young plants in spring will help to give them a chance to get well-established before winter sets in.
