Adiantum capillus-veneris, Venus-hair maidenhair or Southern maidenhair, is an exquisite jewel found in nature across the southern United States as well as tropical areas throughout the world. It is very partial to limestone especially those providing the comfort of seeps and a healthy swath is a spectacular sight (see the cliffs in Zion National Park, Utah and Westcave Preserve, Texas to name but two examples). This species is quite variable with all its manifestations being beautiful. Its typical maidenhair stem is a plum black and supports triangular sprays of delicate light green wedges of pinnules. The deciduous plants creep about forming a ground covering 8 to 18 inch canopy of airy foliage. This clone is hardy in Zones 7 to 10. Growers in colder climates can enjoy it as an indoor (winter) outdoor (summer) pot plant.
